Grand Teton National Park elopement

Hey Alexa... play Johnny Cash!

If you & your love are dreaming of saying your "I do"s surrounded by towering mountain peaks, sparkling blue lakes, & vast, golden meadows, Grand Teton National Park is the PERFECT place to do so.  The Tetons offer some of the most jaw-dropping scenery in the U.S. And the BEST part is that you don't need to hike for miles & miles just to find a stunning backdrop for your celebration.

And that's exactly what one of my sweet couples, Lauren & Sawyer, had in mind for their dream mountain elopement - easy-access locations for their loved ones to attend (yes - mawmaws & pawpaws too), mountain scenery, & surreal images that would embody this significant chapter of their love story.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Before you dive in... I know all of the information you're about to read can feel overwhelming when you're simply just trying to marry the love of your life. That is why I've taken the time to do the research to help you as effectively as I can! Every piece of info is here to help ensure your dream elopement happens without missing any important steps or park updates, though I highly encourage you to research this as well. All of the information below is straight from the National Park Service website - which stays up-to-date with everything necessary for your Grand Teton elopement!

National Park Service website: https://www.nps.gov/index.htm

PERMITS

First things first, your permit is your golden ticket to your elopement celebration. Because Grand Teton National Park is a protected national park & because there are many others like you who desire to marry here, all elopements require a Special Use Permit (SUP) to ensure every couple is given fair access to the park. It is HIGHLY IMPORTANT to fill out your permit application ASAP so you can get the exact date & location you want, as dates & locations book up FAST.

PERMIT COST.

  • The permit fee is $200 (NON-REFUNDABLE) & must be submitted at least 30 days in advance.
  • The permit covers your ceremony, but you & whoever attends also must pay the park entrance fee. The entrance fee is $35 per vehicle & is good for 7 days. OR... if you plan to visit the Tetons more than once within the year, it may be worth it to purchase an annual pass ($70) OR an America the Beautiful Annual Pass ($80 & valid for ALL national parks).
  • The permit allows you up to 1 hour MAX & must be defined with a start & end time. This time includes the arrival for set-up & end time for photos & video. In other words, you will have to leave the ceremony site once your 1 hour is up to continue taking photos (which is okay because trust me, you're going to want photos all throughout the park anyways).

PERMIT TYPES.

I. Reserved Site-Specific Ceremony Permit

  • The total number of permits issued by the park are limited to 1 ceremony per day, per location with a MAX of 60 ceremonies per year per location (with the exception of Colter Bay Swim Beach, which is limited to a MAX of 30 ceremonies per year).
  • There are 6 site-specific ceremony locations that may be applied for:

Colter Bay: limit of 40 people

Schwabacher Landing: limit of 25 people

Mormon Row (North or South): limit of 40 people (north) or 25 people (south)

Mountain View Turnout: limit of 25 people

Glacier View Turnout: limit of 25 people

Snake River Overlook: limit of 25 people

II. Small Dispersed Ceremony Permit

  • Group size is restricted to no more than 12 people - including the wedding party, wedding guests (including children), officiant, photographer & videographer.
  • Locations may be applied for except in prohibited areas. Only 1 permit will be issued per location per day. A location may not be permitted if the ceremony will interfere with or prevent general visitor use or cause resource damage.
  • Prohibited locations include:

*paved trails within & surrounding Jenny Lake Visitor Plaza at South Jenny Lake, Jenny Lake Trail, & Jenny Lake

Overlook

*Hidden Falls & Inspiration Point

*String Lake developed area & trail

*Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve

*Concessioner land assignments (exception for weddings sold/catered by concessioners in assigned facilities)

*park partner facilities (e.g., Murie Ranch, Teton Science School)

*within proximity of places where weddings are being managed by a chapel or concessioner (i.e., Chapel of the Transfiguration)

*park cemeteries

*If a location is behind a gate, the permittee may have walking access but not vehicle access.

*areas where there is high visitation during the requested period or potential for resource damage

  • Of the Reserved Site-Specific Permit locations, except for Schwabacher Landing, locations may be applied for as a Small Dispersed Ceremony Permit with a limit of 12 people.
  • Applicant must provide a location description with coordinates &/or a satellite view map of the requested location.

CEREMONY LOCATIONS

Grand Teton National Park designates certain locations specifically for ceremonies - each with its own unique vibe! Each spot has a set capacity of individuals allowed to attend (including your photographer & videographer). Because the Tetons are an outdoor, rustic, natural environment where the priorities include protecting the park’s resources & allowing all visitors to enjoy it, only small, simple, rustic, & undecorated ceremonies are permitted.

A few popular spots include:

  • Schwabacher Landing - stunning views of the Tetons reflected in the Snake River
  • Mormon Row - rustic barns with the Tetons towering in the horizon; perfect for more of a western cowboy feel
  • Snake River Overlook - wide, panoramic views of the river & the Teton peaks
  • Chapel of the Transfiguration - a historic log chapel with a perfect view of the Tetons framed behind the altar
  • Colter Bay Swim Beach - a lakeside serenity
  • Mountain View Turnout - stunning views of the Tetons; right off the main highway
  • Glacier View Turnout - stunning views of the Tetons; right off the main highway

Here a few important things to note when choosing + applying for your ceremony location:

  • All locations are outdoors & do not offer protection from the weather. The permit prohibits or restricts the use of items such as: decorations, alters, tables, chairs, signs, scattering of materials, non-invasive plants, generators, catered food services, etc.
  • Most locations do not have restroom facilities at or near the ceremony locations.
  • Exclusive use of any area is not permitted; therefore, ceremony sites will remain open for public use during your ceremony.
  • Access to parking may be difficult & parking spaces cannot be reserved or held in advance, so consider carpooling.
  • Group size is restricted based on the permit type & location. Group size includes the wedding party, infants, children, officiant, planners, photographer(s), etc.
  • Applications must be submitted by at least one of the individuals getting married. They may not be submitted by a third party.
  • The permitee must sign the permit to state they understand & accept the permit subject to the terms & conditions.
  • Portrait photos or video may be taken during the permitted events.
  • Please stay on existing trails, durable surfaces such as hardened gravel/rocks trails.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO ELOPE

Every season can be magical at a place like the Tetons! Off season (between mid-September to March), however, is more affordable than busy season - something to keep in mind if you wish to save $.

  • Summer (June-August) - warm weather, lush greenery, & easy access to trails; BUSIEST season
  • Fall (September-October) - crisp air, fewer crowds, & incredible golden aspens; OFF season
  • Winter (November-March) - quiet, snowy, & magical; OFF season
  • Spring (April-May) - melting snow, wildflowers, & peaceful feels; some roads may still be closed from the winter season (see website for all road closure updates); BUSY season

Certain times of the year are off limits to ceremonies with more than 12 people.

As far as time of day, sunrise & sunset are always the best times for the dreamiest ambience in your photos - offering softer light & more privacy, however, you can always have your ceremony at any time of day & save the better-lit times for bride & groom portraits.

AIRPORTS & TRANSPORTATION

Jackson Hole Airport (JAC), located in the heart of Jackson Hole, WY, is the closest & most ideal airport to fly into for your elopement. It's only about a 15-minute drive to Jackson Hole where you will most likely stay during your time here.

You can also fly into Idaho Falls, Idaho at Idaho Falls Regional Airport (IDA) & drive roughly 2 hours to Jackson Hole, or Salt Lake City, UT at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) & drive roughly 4-5 hours to Jackson Hole - as there is a wider variety of flights & cheaper tickets.

As far as getting around if you're flying in, I recommend booking a rental vehicle at the airport. Since Jackson Hole & its surrounding areas are not super populated, some Ubers are available but their prices are quite expensive. Plus... you're definitely going to want to explore the sights & not want to be in the back of an Uber to do so!

LODGING

You are going to want to stay in the small, but lively town of Jackson Hole, WY. 'Outpost' is Jackson Hole's version of Air BnB & has the same exact listings, but offers direct booking which is actually cheaper than booking through Air BnB. Here are a handful of recommended places to stay:

  • The Anvil Hotel - the most rustic, cozy, fall/winter-esque hotel (former motel) that gives 'Wandering Oaken's Trading Post' vibes (if you're a Frozen fan, you know); where I personally stayed when I visited the Tetons (10/10 recommend)
  • The Lodge at Jackson Hole - a spacious, family-friendly condo for bringing along all your loved ones (or if you just want more room for yourselves)
  • The Rockwell Inn
  • Wyoming Inn of Jackson Hole
  • Elk Country Inn
  • The Wort Hotel
  • Hotel Jackson
  • Caldera House
  • The Virginian Lodge
  • Hampton Inn Jackson Hole
  • Four Seasons Resort Jackson Hole
  • Mountain Modern Jackson Hole
  • Cowboy Village Resort
  • Diamond Cross Ranch
  • Snow King Resort Hotel & Condos
  • Teton Mountain Lodge & Spa
  • Togwotee Mountain Lodge
  • Spring Creek Ranch
  • Headwaters Lodge & Cabins at Flagg Ranch
  • Flat Creek Inn
  • The Jackson Southtown
  • 49'Er Inn & Suites
  • Super 8 by Wyndham Jackson Hole
  • The Hostel
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Jackson
  • Elk Refugee Inn
  • Springhill Suites by Marriott Jackson Hole
  • Gravity Haus Jackson Hole
  • Golden Eagle Inn
  • 4 Winds
  • Rustic Inn Creekside Resort & Spa at Jackson Hole

EXPLORE LAUREN & SAWYER'S FALL TETON ELOPEMENT

Grand Teton National Park elopement

Lauren & Sawyer made the decision to ditch the big, traditional wedding & elope in Grand Teton National Park. They still wanted their dearest loved ones by their side, so they brought along their family & had their ceremony at the location of their dreams!

ABOUT THEIR ELOPEMENT

They booked me for 6-hours, which included getting ready photos of the bride, bride & father first look, the ceremony, & about 3 hours of bride & groom portraits around the park. In all, it was the perfect custom package for what they were looking for!

WHERE THEY ELOPED

The two exchanged vows & said their "I do"s at Glacier View Turnout. Glacier View Turnout is a scenic viewpoint located right off of Teton Park Road (US Highway 26/89/191) & is only about 20 minutes from Jackson Hole. They had over 12 of their closest family members attend, so they used the Reserved Site-Specific Ceremony Permit.

NEXT ON THEIR ADVENTURE: BRIDE & GROOM PORTRAITS

After the ceremony, the two said their goodbyes to their family while we went off to explore the park for bride & groom portraits. Our first stop was on the side of the road that leads to Schwabacher Landing, so we stopped here to grab some portraits & do a little gift exchange before heading to Schwabacher.

SPOT 1: SCHWABACHER LANDING

For the majority of the time we were here, the two sat by the Snake River & wrote their vows. Although I didn't get a chance to see the entirety of the park & all of its beautiful sites, Schwabacher Landing is one spot I would go back to in a heartbeat. I would 100% recommend writing &/or reading your vows here because of its peaceful, serene environment. The Tetons framing every image, the reflection of the evergreens in the water, the warm, golden meadows - everywhere you look is absolutely captivating!

SPOT 2: JENNY LAKE

After vows, we drove to Jenny Lake to capture bride & groom portraits by the water before it got closer to sunset. Jenny Lake is another EPIC spot to take photos & explore more of the park's natural beauty. Some options you can include here on your elopement day to make things more adventurous & interesting include: hiking one of the lake trails (Inspiration Point, Hidden Falls, or Cascade Canyon) taking a boat ride, renting a canoe or kayak, or skipping rocks by the shore.

SPOT 3: MORMON ROW

The last spot we ventured to was the classic Mormon Row/T.A. Moulton Barn to capture golden hour portraits as the sun set behind the mountains. This spot is perfect for those of you who want a little bit of a western, cowboy/cowgirl vibe in your photos - just as Lauren & Sawyer did. My favorite part about spending golden hour here versus anywhere else in the park was the shadows of their cowboy hats on the barn! I mean... how stinkin' adorable.

SPOT 4: MILLION DOLLAR COWBOY BAR

To finish off the most perfect elopement day, we made a quick stop at the EPIC Million Dollar Cowboy Bar in downtown Jackson Hole. We didn't go inside, but we made sure to grab a quick photo outside before heading off to dinner with their family. All in all, it was the perfect mini photo opt to end their day in a way that felt like them!
